Phrases of Purification
These phrases are interesting because they point toward different psychological and spiritual functions. Some strengthen identity, some create distance from experience, some cultivate kindness, and some establish awareness before engaging with difficulty.
One thing I have noticed from your previous explorations is that phrases connected to Pure Mind often evoke a felt sense of lightness, openness, and peace for you. That may be an important clue when evaluating which phrases are most beneficial in practice.
1. “I am pure.”
Intention
Identity-based affirmation.
Possible Benefits
- Encourages remembering one’s deeper nature.
- May evoke innocence, goodness, and spiritual dignity.
- Can counter shame and self-condemnation.
Possible Difficulties
For some people, the phrase can unconsciously create a struggle:
- “If I am pure, why am I afraid?”
- “If I am pure, why do I still suffer?”
The mind may begin measuring itself against an ideal.
Alternative
Rather than declaring purity as an achievement:
- “Purity is present.”
- “Pure awareness is here.”
- “Pure Mind is here.”
These tend to be gentler and less likely to create inner conflict.
2. “I am Ross.”
Intention
Personal identity.
Benefits
This acknowledges the human being living this life.
It can be grounding.
It can also support self-compassion:
- Ross is learning.
- Ross is healing.
- Ross is growing.
You have previously observed that phrases using your name often produce a warmer emotional response than phrases beginning with “I.”
That suggests that referring to Ross may help activate a caring, witnessing relationship with yourself.
Limitation
It remains connected to personal history and biography.
Pure Mind practice often invites awareness beyond biography.
3. “I release my emotional attachments to fear.”
Intention
Freedom from identification.
Benefits
This recognizes:
- Fear may remain.
- Attachment to fear can soften.
That is a subtle and important distinction.
You are not fighting fear.
You are releasing the emotional grip around fear.
Limitation
The phrase may imply an immediate act of letting go.
Sometimes the nervous system is not ready.
In those moments:
- “I am willing to release my emotional attachments to fear.”
may feel more natural.
4. “I release all my emotional attachments to fear.”
Intention
Complete release.
Benefit
Can feel powerful and decisive.
Possible Difficulty
The word “all” can create tension.
Part of the mind may respond:
- “No, I don’t.”
- “Not yet.”
Whenever the subconscious disagrees with a statement, resistance may increase.
A gentler variation might be:
- “May my emotional attachments to fear soften.”
- “May my emotional attachments to fear be released in their own time.”
5. “Pure Mind, I release my emotional attachments to fear.”
Intention
Establish awareness first, then engage fear.
Strength
This is very consistent with the direction you have been developing.
The order matters.
First:
- Pure Mind.
Then:
- Fear.
This often changes the emotional tone completely.
Instead of fear trying to fix fear, awareness is holding fear.
The phrase suggests:
From the perspective of Pure Mind, attachments may soften naturally.
Possible Refinement
- “Pure Mind, calmly abiding with fear.”
- “Pure Mind, welcoming fear.”
- “Pure Mind, fear is known.”
These emphasize relationship rather than effort.
6. “May I be safe.”
Intention
Protection and reassurance.
Benefits
One of the most universal and effective compassion phrases.
It speaks directly to the nervous system.
Particularly useful when:
- anxiety is present
- freeze is present
- vulnerability is present
It asks for nothing heroic.
Only safety.
Psychological Effect
Often creates softening and settling.
7. “May I be happy.”
Intention
Well-being.
Benefits
Classic loving-kindness phrase.
Invites warmth and goodwill.
Possible Difficulty
When suffering is strong, happiness may feel distant.
Some people unconsciously argue with it.
- “But I’m not happy.”
In difficult periods, phrases such as:
- “May I be at peace.”
- “May I be gentle with myself.”
- “May I meet this moment wisely.”
can sometimes land more easily.
8. “Pure Mind, may I be happy.”
Intention
Happiness arising within awareness rather than from conditions.
What Changes?
The addition of “Pure Mind” shifts the center of gravity.
The phrase no longer feels like a personal demand.
Instead it becomes:
From Pure Mind, may happiness naturally arise.
For someone whose experience of Pure Mind is associated with joy, lightness, and peace, this phrase may be more effective than “May I be happy” alone.
The emphasis moves from striving for happiness to resting in the source of happiness.
A Possible Hierarchy of Purification
Looking at the overall direction of your work, the phrases seem to fall into three levels.
Level 1 — Identity
- I am Ross.
- I am pure.
These shape how you see yourself.
Level 2 — Release
- I release my emotional attachments to fear.
- Pure Mind, I release my emotional attachments to fear.
These work with conditioning and habit.
Level 3 — Blessing
- May I be safe.
- May I be happy.
- Pure Mind, may I be happy.
These cultivate kindness and well-being.
A sequence that seems particularly aligned with your PURE MIND Abiding approach might be:
Pure Mind.
Fear is known.
Attachments may soften.
May this fear be well and understood.
This sequence does not force purification. It allows purification to emerge from awareness, understanding, and kindness. In many contemplative traditions, that tends to produce deeper and more lasting transformation than trying to push unwanted experiences away.
